Presenting Sunshine Artist's first-ever 'Sunny Awards'

for Memorable Show Performances
By Bill Sievert

We could have taken the easy way out for our year-end roundup, providing a recap of the major news stories of 2003 as they affected artists and crafters on the show circuit. Let's see, there was havoc with the weather that toppled tents from coast to coast, and a rash of crime that included thefts of merchandise and money in too many venues. Then, of course, there was the war in Iraq and a struggling economy that affected many artists' sales. But you, our readers, know all that stuff already; and most of it is way too depressing to dwell on during this, the holiday season.

So, we've decided to offer you something different by way of an end-of-year wrap-up for 2003. We have carefully selected some of the year's most magical moments reported by our contributing writers and auditors, and come up with a set of very special awards to honor a few of the people and events that made this such an unforgettable 12 months. (To the winners: Don't expect to receive a ribbon or a trophy, for everyone who survived another year on the art-show circuit deserves a prize in this competition...)

Without further ado, we almost proudly present the 2003 Sunny Awards for best performances at an art and/or craft show.

Safety "steps" aren't always the best idea

The "Curb Your Enthusiasm" Award goes to the new fire chief of St. Genevieve, Missouri, who is also the fire marshal. He thought he was being safety conscious when he instituted a fire lane of 30 feet, rather than the traditional 15 to 18 feet, for the town's annual Jour de Fette (Day of Celebration) art show in August.
