Show Review Archive

By Dave Luebben

Editor's note: Dave Luebben is a SA contributing writer. His last article, in the May 2005 issue, focused on celebrities from several different walks of life who, early in their careers, had either exhibited on the art-show circuit or simply been inspired by art. As with that article, it is my hope that the following profile will inspire you to think beyond the world of art and craft shows, and realize your full potential as an artist.

Indiana-based Mark Polomchak is a respected artist whose work is collected nationally and internationally. After a number of years pursuing watercolor painting and becoming well known on the show circuit, he decided to widen his focus. His goals of achieving success and living comfortably meant a change in perspective toward maximizing his creative assets.

Today, while still exhibiting at top shows, Polomchak also owns a gallery in Crown Point, Indiana, has work in other galleries nationwide, maintains a Web site, and during 2005, booked more than 42 workshop demonstrations and seminars with art leagues and private groups.

Accountants stress the value of never letting your assets become idle. Excepting business operating capital, raw-materials inventory, and personal or family wealth (if they are fortunate enough to have some), most artists and craftspeople have three primary assets. These are finished works, knowledge and talent. The evolution of Polomchak’s career demonstrates how one very successful artist has achieved a personally satisfying balance between the creative and business elements. It is very much a story of right brain meets left brain and, after some initial conflicts, how the two sides work out a happy compromise.
