Ringing in the New Year … with art

By the time the end of the year rolls around, most artists are straining to pay their bills. There are simply no profitable fine art shows in December, as the general public is totally focused on the holidays, upcoming family gatherings and buying small gifts. Purchasing fine art is not on their itinerary. Crafts, yes — art, no.

Then along comes an oxymoron like Howard Alan’s Downtown Naples New Year’s Weekend Art Fair. Anyone who has been in this business long enough knows that sponsoring an art show around any type of holiday is iffy at best. However, noting that this show is in its 10th year, Howard and Debbie Alan obviously have been able to do the impossible: host a very successful art event during the holiday season.

And successful this show is, as it often ranks in Sunshine Artist’s 200 Best (usually in the top 25). As Alan puts it, "The whole world is in Naples during New Year’s weekend." And to ensure high attendance, he employs a dynamic marketing strategy.
