Since SA started compiling the 200 Best in 1993, it seems our culture has gone a bit list crazy. Anytime you turn on your TV or pick up a magazine, someone is trying to rank something or offer objective advice on subjective topics. Well, even though the 200 Best may be imperfect, just like all those other lists out there, we take pride in the fact that it is YOUR list, based upon your feedback.
How it works
This is a list of the 100 top-selling events in each of our two categories (Fine Art & Design and Classic & Contemporary Crafts), based upon your votes. You were asked to send in your ballots, which were included with the April issue, listing your 10 top-selling events of calendar year 2005. As you may recall, the ballots were detailed and included spaces to write in not just the names of the events, the months in which the shows took place and the promoter, but also your gross sales at each venue. We then tallied up the individual votes, and out of close to 1,000 shows that received votes this year, 200 made the final cut.
We have a new #1 Fine Art & Design show this year, and although the show has been around for 50 years and is often billed as the granddaddy of Midwest art shows, it has seen a dramatic rise on our list over the last two years. The voting was close, though, as it barely eclipsed last year’s winner. The rest of the shows in the top 10 were remarkably close to one another, too, reflecting a healthy competitiveness that was present throughout the entire 200 Best. On the Classic & Contemporary Crafts list, last year’s #1 show was again the clear winner, pulling off an unprecedented "four-peat."
