Why is the 200 Best important to patrons?

By Cameron Meier
SA Editor

If you're an artist, you know why the 200 Best is so meaningful: It's the industry's most reliable ranking of the nation's top-selling shows. But if you're a show-goer, an art collector or an artist who occasionally visits a show at which you're not exhibiting, what does our annual survey mean to you?

In short, it means that these are the shows at which you bought the most art or craft. So even though it was the working artists who voted the shows onto the list, it was really you, the patrons, who cast your vote by spending your money. But does purchasing power equal quality?

Do the "best"shows always rank highest?

Before answering that question, we have to define "best."For the purposes of our 200 Best list, best has always meant top-selling, as voted on by subscribers of Sunshine Artist. If we tried to produce a list that incorporated ALL factors that make a show great, such as attendance, size, quality and overall enjoyment, the list would end up being entirely subjective, not to mention virtually impossible to compile.

So do sales equal quality? To help answer that question, we can turn to two promoters known for their multiple high-quality events.

Amy Amdur runs 11 reputable shows in the Chicago area, but not all of them make the 200 Best. What sets her 200 Best shows apart from those that don't make the list? And is her top-ranking event truly the best-quality one?
